We’re kicking off our new theme for November and December: Scarcity to Abundance.
I’m excited for this because this is where true and positive change starts.
And I want you to be ALL in.
And by the way, I’m going through this journey right along with you. I have some major goals that I want to hit next year and this is a great time to hyperfocus on those goals going into 2021.
It only makes sense for us to kick this off by talking about what Scarcity vs. Abundance means because only then can we make the decision to make the switch.
Success starts with the right mindset.
Before we jump in, let me introduce myself if you're a newbie here.
Hi there! I am the Perception Diva™. THE Perception Diva.
You can learn more about what I do here.
To sum it all up, my mission is to help women around the world conquer their fears, get unstuck, have the courage to move towards something they’ve been inspired to do and feel empowered to create the life they truly want to live—and express it wholeheartedly and authentically.
My posts include...
And I'm not afraid to call people out on their BS.
Everything is focused on mindset.
And I'm not just slinging advice around. I've worked my way through many life challenges, from being broke and homeless with a scarcity mindset to becoming a spirit-led entrepreneur who's continually building an abundance mindset.
And much of what I write about, I'm journeying through it too.
We're creating an abundance mindset together!!
Oh an I forgot to add, I’m the author of the New York Times best seller, Totally Unstoppable, which has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide.
Okay, that's not true. Well, partially. I AM the author of Totally Unstoppable, but the rest is me putting it out there to the Universe. A girl can dream!!!
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's continue.
Stephen Covey initially coined the terms "scarcity mentality versus an abundance mentality" in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. If you've never read that book, I highly recommend it.
Here are the 7 habits in case you're curious:
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit 4: Think Win/Win << You’ll find mention of scarcity mentality vs an abundance mentality here.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
The book is based on the belief that the way we see the world is entirely based on our own perceptions. It's centered on career, but it applies to life overall.
It's a good read. 464 pages of juicy wisdom.
You have two choices when it comes to the way you think about life.
You can choose to see the world as a place of abundance or a place of scarcity. One is certainly more optimistic than the other! Your view of the world is very different depending on which you choose.
How you view the world can affect the opportunities you see, your expectations, and ultimately your results.
An abundance mindset is hopeful, positive, and expects the best. It is also more altruistic, since you believe that you’ll receive what you need. It frees you up to do more for yourself and others.
A scarcity mindset, on the other hand, thrives on fear and leads to negativity and procrastination. You feel the need to look out for yourself, even at the expense of others and you have a belief of never-enoughness. Never enough money, never enough love, never enough time, never enough breaks in life, never enough opportunities...I could go on.
Unknowingly though, while someone with a scarcity mindset THINKS they’re looking out for themselves, they’re actually hindering their own growth and staying stuck and stagnant.
Viewing the world from a position of abundance has several positive effects on your life.
To put things in perspective, here are 5 beliefs someone with an abundance mindset has versus someone with a scarcity mindset:
An abundance mindset believes that there is plenty to go around. You believe there is plenty of money in the world, plenty of potential partners, and plenty of opportunities in general.
○ A scarcity mindset believes there is a limited supply of everything, and that someone else must lose in order for you to win or that you will always lose.
Life is easier with an abundance mindset. You believe that anything is possible. With that attitude, you’re willing to try and you expect things will eventually go your way.
○ If you have a scarcity mindset, you believe that life is difficult. You see success as being harder than it really is. You expect the worst and might convince yourself that it’s pointless to even try. It’s much more challenging to be successful with a scarcity mindset.
Opportunities are easier to see when you expect to find them. An abundance mindset makes opportunities more visible. Seek and ye shall find. Your expectations are often met in life.
○ If you believe opportunities are scarce, you’ll struggle to find them. This is true even if they’re right in front of your face.
You take more risks with an abundance mindset. You believe the likelihood of success is greater, so you take more risks. The more you risk, the more you stand to gain. You also potentially have more to lose, but that’s part of the game. Those that are bold tend to outperform those that are timid.
○ You’re more likely to play it safe if you view the world from a position of scarcity. You’re more afraid of losing what you have since you believe it will be difficult to get it back.
Those with an abundance mindset are more relaxed. When you believe the world has everything you need, you can relax and enjoy life. You view the possibilities as endless. Your overall viewpoint of your life is more positive.
○ A scarcity mindset results in fear and pessimism. You believe you have to fight the world to get what you want and need. You have to protect what you have from loss. Your life is viewed negatively.
Do you think your view of the world is one of abundance or scarcity?
If you hold a scarcity mindset, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. It took me a while to shift my mindset and I still actively work on it every day.
Hopefully you can agree that it’s worth trying another viewpoint on for size.
And hopefully, you’re ready to take this crazy ride with me.
One of the best ways to start viewing the world with abundance is to give more.
You can give a donation of money to someone who needs it, your time, or give away a few of your unused possessions.
Sounds crazy, but giving will enforce the idea that there is ALWAYS ENOUGH to go around.
Abundance will flow into your life if you allow it. After holding an abundance mindset for a few months, contrast that with your previous experience with scarcity. You can then choose the one that is more beneficial for you.
